On Saturday, Alabama defeated Arkansas 24-13 in Tuscaloosa. This pushes their record to 4-0 and sets up a matchup with Florida on October 1, 3:30 EST on CBS.

Baby Day
(In reverse order - all times approximate)
September 26, 2005
6:00 pm: Find out the baby's name -- Lucas Evan.
6:30 am: Wake up for work. Groan.
2:30 am: Go to bed. Set alarm for 6:30. Grumble.
1:30 am: Get home from hospital. Consume Taco Bell. Get laundry to a stopping point for the day.
1:00 am: Leave hospital. Listen to the rumble in my gut. Decide on Taco Bell for sustenance.
12:30 am: Apparently, two names are on the table: Kyler Grant and Lucas Evan. The name Grant is dismissed as that is the name of the hospital. Nothing is decided. (My attempts to vote for Lucas Evan are shot down when I announced that I would call the child “Lev.” Grandma no like. Gordon finds funny. Sam not serious. All breathe sigh of relief.)
12:00 am: See Stacie. Converse about the day.
September 25, 2005
11:48 pm: Everyone (save Grandma, Grandpa, and Gordon) sees the child for the first time. He’s huge! He has Gordon’s whole head! He does have more hair than Justin!
11:40 pm: Stacie’s parents emerge from the surgery/delivery/whatever-they-call-it area and announce that Stacie’s being moved into a room where we all can visit.
11:00 pm: Gordon comes back and lets us know that two people can come in to see Stacie and the boy. Grandpa and Grandma are the unanimous choices. Leslie and Gretchen call next.
10:54 pm: Stats are given. He’s nine pounds, five ounces and 20 inches long. Did I just type that? Even now, 12-ish hours later, it still amazes me. He’s a big human for his age. I’m not sure, but he may already be taller than Gretchen.
10:25 pm: Gordon finally comes out, beaming from ear to ear.
It’s a boy! No stats yet, but he’s big. Not one to miss out on asking the tough, relevant questions, I start the following exchange (actual dialog possibly altered, but content is not):
Sam: “So, Gordon, does he have more hair than you?” (Gordon’s hair is intentionally short – he is in the military and all.)
Gordon: “No.”
Sam: “So…uh…does he have more hair than Justin?” (Justin’s hair is short. This is only partially intentional…)
Gordon: “Yes, yes he does.”
10:10 pm: A bell rings in the waiting room. The new grandparents rejoice, as that apparently means a baby has been born. I remind everyone that it might not be Stacie’s. The other mother could simply be less popular (we had nine people in the room).
10:06 pm: The spawn of Gordon and Stacie was born at this time. Let it be shouted from the highest mountain that Gordon has reproduced officially now. Congratulations go to them! However, pray for the rest of us…
Notes from time between 6 pm and birth:
6:00 pm: Arrive at the hospital.
5:00 pm: Gordon calls and tells Gretchen that Stacie is 8-9 cm dilated. We wrap things up at home and head out.
11:30 am – 5:00 pm: Perform various and sundry tasks around the house to prepare for imminent in-law move-in.
11:00 am: Gretchen calls Leslie and hears the current baby news.
10:30 am: Leslie calls both my cell and our home phones and leaves a message.
4:30 am: Leslie calls to tell us that Stacie’s water broke. Gretchen and I were sleeping, as we are bad humans. (Actually, we couldn’t answer – our upstairs phone’s ringer is out.)

Notes from time between 6 pm and birth:
- Stacie and Gordon decided to have the doctors do a cesarean section as opposed to giving birth naturally (maybe) at 4 am. Long story short, a nurse made a mistake in the amount Stacie had dilated, leaving four to six more hours of labor for her. She opted for the c-section.
- A pair of little girls (average age 10), sisters I presume, are bugging us to play games (we had cards and such). They are quite rowdy, and quite bold. At one point, Leslie asks if they had a relative giving birth. One of the girls says, “I’m just up here playing because my mom…(brief pause)…her brother got shot.” She then proceeds to play some more, not even reflecting on her words. I realize that she’s ten, but it takes me aback how desensitized she was. Very sad…
- Justin, Leslie, and Shana arrive at about 6:30. No computer, so no live-blogging. Oh, well – now you get to read this!
- Gretchen disappears at some point – I don’t see her again until Gordon and Stacie officially begin to consider the c-section.
- Lots of card-playing.

Baby Pictures (or lack thereof)
Justin and I are working to get at least one picture of the new Gordon/Stacie hybrid-human on the site. As soon as one of us can convince a computer to accept the instructions we're passing to it, we'll have it up. Until then, imagine three things – he’s cute, huge, and has Gordon's head (the whole thing - fully formed!).

Help is on the way...
Our friend Gordon, who is in the Army National Guard, has been activated to join the relief effort. We don't know much else. He reports to his unit tomorrow morning.
All those affected by these storms (both victims and rescuers) need our thoughts and prayers.
Gordon, you have ours. Be careful out there.
Edit 9/28: Because Stacie had her baby, Gordon gets a pass from this call-up. He'll be able to stay at home and take care of Stacie and Lucas. Good luck to the unit, and I hope they all come home safely.

Insanity of Sam
I'm feeling a bit odd today.
A little nuts.
I really need this weekend to get going...
Just so I don't have to be at work.

New Dark Horse Comics super hero idea: Special Person Who Uses Poo to His Advantage Guy (SPWUPHAG)
Ravnica will kick ass.
I won poker last night.
Yay for me!
In-Laws Moving Fun begins this weekend.
I will not let my weekend suck because of that.
Even though they will be moving in with Gretchen and me.
Also...when will I get sleep?
I think I'll shoot people tonight.
(On Halo 2, if you must know...geez...)
I might play poker.
Who knows...
I think I'll stop now.
Or not.
I'm really feeling crazy.

That would be better...

Blackrose Joins RandomHumans.com
Another member has been added to the entropic mass that is RandomHumans.com. Josh (or Blackrose) has joined our band of happy randomness researchers. His site, BlackroseWorld, has been referenced on this here blog a few times, and will be a place for a lot of our gaming content as we go forward (stay tuned as we work that out).
I'm sure Josh will introduce himself properly, but in case he doesn't, look for him about....

Random Rhetorical Questions...
1. If Hurricane Rita hits land as predicted, will our response be better because we learned something from the Katrina mistakes, or because it's Texas?
2. Will the Braves quit screwing around and wrap up the division already?
3. I'm up to $231.23 on PokerStars. Have I stumbled onto something here, or is it just beginner's luck?
4. Does my dog always have to bark at new people, or will she learn to shut the hell up? Ever???
5. Does anyone actually look forward to paying $5-ish a gallon for gas?
6. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

A Part-Time Gig?
This may be an aberration, but I made $132 last night playing poker at PokerStars. I sat down at a $.25/$.50 (blinds) table with 20 bucks and left with just over $152. My bankroll is up to approximately $184.

Alabama 37, South Carolina 14
Another game, another win for the Alabama Crimson Tide. This week, South Carolina was the victim as the Tide rolled through Columbia for a 37-14 win. It was a dominating performance by the Tide ground game, running everywhere against Steve Spurrier's porous defense. Arkansas is next for Alabama as the Hogs come to Tuscaloosa next Saturday.
Also, Tyrone Prothro came away with the Pontiac Game-Changing Performance last week. This week, Keith Brown's 46-yard touchdown catch is up for the award. (It's under week 3.) While not as impressive as Tyrone's grab, it was still a big play in a big spot. Vote for it if you want.

Final Tally...
$127,805!
That's how much money was raised by the Hurricane Katrina relief events on PokerStars.
Information about last night's $100 tourney can be found here.
I'm glad Wil put this together and I'm glad I could play in two of the events. That number is quite amazing!
Don't forget, if you are so inclined, you can still donate at RedCross.org.

Katrina Tournament #3
PokerStars had the third of four charity tournaments for Hurricane Katrina relief last night. I didn't play, but I looked in just as Wil Wheaton was eliminated. His blog (posted live as it happened last evening) of the event is here.
However, the most important thing is that the players and PokerStars raised $21,296.74, bringing the total to $72,876.74 for the Red Cross. W00T!
The final tournament is tonight. Donate if you can, and have fun if you play!

Katrina Relief Event #2
Last night, PokerStars and Wil Wheaton hosted the second Hurricane Katrina relief event. It was a tremendously fun event, with over $29,000 from 738 players going to the Red Cross.
Oh, and by the way...I got to play with Wil Wheaton!
Well...for like 5 minutes.
I was a little starstruck, but played good enough poker to not look silly. I came to the table with a good stack (my recollection is sketchy - I've got to take physical notes) and playing rather well. I did get into one pot with Wil, which consisted of us going to the flop, me betting and him folding. Then I got to go to another table, where (after quite a while) I met my end. More on that in a moment.
Last night was a pretty good night for the debut of Team RandomHumans. Justin (randomjustin), Josh (Blackrose13), and myself (RandomSam) all played in the tournament. Justin finished 215th, I finished 35th, and Josh finished 21st! Josh put up his report here.
The one "not great" thing about last night is that Justin and I were seated at the same table to start! Ack! We did OK staying out of any major pots together, although (as per usual) we didn't shy away from confrontation. You've got to treat the game with respect and all that. It was odd to be playing with Justin online seeing as how we play every week in our regular game.
I also finished my supply of limeade last night. Very sad. I'll have to pick up more at the store.
Overall, an excellent evening that came to an end when my pocket eights lost to ace-jack when their ace paired on the turn.
Remember, Hurricane Katrina relief tournaments continue tonight and tomorrow, with the $50 and $100 buy-in events. Those are a little rich for my bankroll, but rumor has it that Josh may represent the team in one of those events. Stay tuned to BlackroseWorld for that.
Our regular game is tonight at Justin's. It will be nice to play some live poker after being online the last three nights.
Until next time...

First Katrina Relief Tourney
Last night, PokerStars held their first Katrina relief event. Over $22,000 was raised to support the folks down south that need help. Read more about last night's event here and the upcoming events here.
As for RandomSam (me), I finished 327th out of 2212. Not terrible, but not great. I was busted when my AQ of hearts ran into two random cards that happened to get flushed. To make things worse, I had hit two pair by the turn (aces & queens)! Oh, well. I played pretty well, with only one major mistake. I overplayed a hand where I misclicked and called instead of folding. I attempted to bluff, and my opponent's 7 paired. Should have just checked it down and folded to any bet. Didn't really hurt me, but I hate making stupid mistakes, no matter how cheaply.
The important thing is that the Red Cross is getting a hefty chunk of change as a result of the players who signed up. Thanks to everyone, and thanks to Wil Wheaton in particular for getting the ball rolling on this.
Team RandomHumans (I just made that up...may keep using it...hmmm...) will be represented on Wednesday night as well. Josh (Blackrose13) and I (RandomSam) are confirmed to be playing in the $20 Katrina relief tournament. Come join us - it's for the best cause, and hey, it'll be fun!
(Unless someone sucks a flush out on me again...)

It's all so very clear to me now...
From The Moderate Voice:
No one is allowed to question the masks.
Follow the links...it should be worth it. If nothing else, it hits the political nail on the head.

Interesting Quote
From Moby:
I had an epiphany a few years ago where I was out at a celebrity party and it suddenly dawned on me that I had yet to meet a celebrity who is as smart and interesting as any of my friends.
That just struck me today...don't even know why.

Alabama's Prothro Up for Game-Changing Award
I posted earlier about Alabama's victory over Southern Miss and the great catch made by Tyrone Prothro. Well, it seems that Tyrone's catch is up for ESPN's Pontiac Game-Changing Performance this week. Vote if you want, but check out the video anyway. It's a crazy-good catch, and the best I've seen.
(It's under Wk.2 if you check the link after Sept. 17 or so.)

Rebirth
Phase 1 complete...the motherboard, CPU, and video card are safely ensconced in my system, and I think I have gotten all the drivers up to date. It was a little touchy for a while, until I was able to install the new video drivers. Keep in mind, this is still my old install of Windows XP 32-bit edition that is booting on my 64-bit hardware. Next step is to install XP 64 (next to, not instead of, 32 bit) and bask in the glory of all those extra bits.
Into the chrysalis
Today
I want to take a moment to remember this dark day of our history. Even though I strongly disagree with the manner in which the leadership of our country has used this tragedy to further their political agenda, I do think it has changed us as a people forever.
Tide rolls again...
Alabama beat Southern Mississippi last night 30-21. It was a hard-fought game, but Southern Miss's early momentum was stopped by a tremendous catch by Tyrone Prothro (you may have to look for it, but it's the catch made by #4 around the defender's neck). That's a record of 2-0 for the Tide, who rolls into South Carolina next week.
Woo hoo!

Hurricane Katrina Relief Poker Tournaments Reminder
PokerStars is hosting Katrina relief tournaments starting Monday. I'm playing in the $5 one Monday night, and may play on Wednesday, depending on how my schedule shakes out. My username is RandomSam, and I hope to see you there.
Remember also that you can donate to the Red Cross or any other charitable organization should you have the means and the will to do so. Every little bit helps, and it's important that we take care of those whose world has been turned upside down.

What is .NET
Fellow Ohioan James Avery writes the best explanation of the .net platform I've yet read. Kudos!
JP Update...longer, dirtier, and uncut.
Tuesday night, we recieved word that the problem with the Jeep was diagnosed to be the PCU - some computer thingy. Not in stock, 2 days to ship, $600. We searched used car parts sites, and found one. Called the dealer, who said it was in stock, and gave us his address. 3 hours away. So we rented a car, and at 4 the next morning, began the drive to Appleton. We arrived at 8 am, only to find that we had been misled - the part was at another corporate location 2 !@#$ hours away.
Ugh. I screamed obscenities outside the store, got in the car, and found another salvage yard closer than the two hours which did have the part. They informed us that this behavior was par for the course for the original idiots we dealt with.
We got back to the Jeep at about noon, and had a shop replace the unit after my unsuccessful attempt to get to it. It wasnt working at that point, but we expected that the unit might have to be reprogrammed, so it was towed back to the dealer. The dealer re-flashed the ROM in the computer, but no luck.
Ugh.
The dealer is today just doing a part by part examination to determine the problem. About an hour ago, they should have received a brand new part, so hopefully something is working by now. I just wanna get home.

JP update...
I received a message from Justin via Google Talk this morning. He and his wife are on the move - going three hours for a car part. All is well (with the exception of the whole broken-down vehicle thing). Don't fret, as his entropic contributions will return to the Greater Columbus, Ohio area soon (and you never know when he'll blog via his phone).
In the meantime, I will continue to provide Random Picture Love (TM) in his absence.

We departed Tulaby today at about noon. We had a wonderful but exhausting time there - working on Joe's cabin:
Five hours later, tooling down I94 through Wisconsin, the Jeep decided it was far enough and shut off.
Ugh.
We called triple-a and surfed the web on my cell phone for a pet friendly hotel in Black River Falls. And here I am blogging from the hotel wireless (1.5 Mpbs! W00t!)
Tomorrow is Labor Day. No rental places open. No mechanics working. Just a hotel room on I94. Thank god a major discount retailer is walking distance away.

Charity Poker Tournaments for Katrina Relief
I'm posting this on both RandomHumans.com and BlackroseWorld so that the word gets out to more folks. If you read both (which you should), I apologize for the redundancy.
Several online poker tournaments are being held by PokerStars for Hurricane Katrina relief, thanks to Wil Wheaton. PokerStars is even matching the buy-in! Click Wil's name above for the story. Also, Dr. Pauly of the Tao of Poker has good info about these and FullTilt's tournament here.
I may play in the $5 and/or $20 PokerStars tournaments. I will post my username (in case anyone cares) once I set up the software this week.
If you play online poker, give some a whirl. It's for an excellent cause, and you could even win some great prizes, which Wil discusses in his post.
Edit (9/6) - My PokerStars username is RandomSam. I'm not sure which tourney I'm playing in, but the $5 one may be the only one my schedule will allow. Hope to see everyone there.
