Live Blogging Tournament de WWdN

As Justin mentioned, Wil is having his regular Tuesday tourney tonight. I, too, shall be live blogging the event.

Pants.

Back when cards are in the air!

8:29 EST - I've been seated, and we've got 121 players so far. I'll update after early registration closes.

8:32 - I win my first pot when my pocket 3s hold up against shewhore's Ace high.

8:36 - I get another pot from shewhore when I get AJ on the button and flop two pair. I get called all the way down and rake a sizeable pot. I'm up over 2000 now.

8:55 - Firefox was acting up, so I've restarted my machine. I've picked up three or four pots without seeing a flop. Justin was eliminated in 120th. I didn't see the hand due to the restart. Bummer.

Also...the prize levels and such:

125 players

18 placed paid

1st $375
2nd $250

Pretty cool.

9:02 - Lost a good size pot with AK. GScottW called my opening raise with QJ and hit a Q. I never improved, and proceeded to continue calling until the end. Valuable info, but expensive. I'm down to around 1700. Got to step it up...

9:09 - Picked up a huge pot against drjgame3 when I raised preflop, was called. I bet $200 on flop, was raised to $500. I reraised to $1000 and he folded. I'm above par again, thankfully. I've got 2705 right now.

9:16 - Just checked out CardSquad, and guess what? Wil linked to us! w00t! I now return you to normal tournament action. Current hand: K2 off. Fold.

This is riveting!

Pants.

9:23 - I've been moved to another table. Garthmeister has a stack over 8000. NHL 200X gets booted when Garth makes a flush. He's got over 9800. Uphill climb for Sam.

Sabboth busted Wil, so he's got the next tourney named after him. Congrats!

9:29 - Chaswell doubled through Garthmeister with KK. Garth had 99 and didn't improve. A little hope yet.

9:31 - Break time! I've got 2755, good for 26th. Par is 2568, so I'm OK. Still need to do some work. Back after break.

9:42 - Teekno has taken around 750 of my chips on the last two hands. Must consider new method of playing them... I've still got about 2500.

9:46 - Problem solved. I raise before flop with 88, he calls. Flop comes 6-9-7. I bet, Teekno pushes, I call. AQ offsuit. Teek doesn't improve and I take a nice pot. I'm right around 4000 in chips right now.

9:54 - I'm up to 4810 in chips. Nothing really to mention...I've had a couple nice hands that haven't got customers. We'll see how things go. I'm currently 12th.

9:58 - Chaswell got busted by owentgs when his QJ ran into AJ on the river when a jack came off.

10:01 - I took a nice pot from Garth and am up over 7000. Landed in 4th place. I also have been moved. Shane Nickerson is here. Should be fun!

10:06 - HAMMER sighting! BrainMc doubled up through cfinnn when his HAMMER made a boat against cfinnn's two pair. Two hands later, I drop the HAMMER on Decker711. Love the HAMMER, live the HAMMER.

Pants.

10:14 - Just lost a big hand to Nickerson. I had QJ and called his preflop raise from the big blind. I hit a Queen on the flop and pushed on flop and turned. I couldn't get him away from his hand, and the river came with an Ace. He shows AK. Bummer. Nice hand, Shane.

10:19 - Moved to yet another table. I get into a pot with tajeric which involves me all-in with 8's versus his KK. I hit an 8 on the flop and another on the river, for quads! CJ gives a "dems quads beeches" from his observers post. Taj is crippled and goes out a couple of hands later. Ouch.

10:29 - It's official. I'm a luckbox. I raise with KJ and get raised by Sabboth. I think for a minute and I think he may be trying to push me off the hand. So, I move in. He considers laying it down, but calls. Good move, as he has QQ. Of course, in true luckbox fashion, I hit a King and double up. I totally have to keep playing solid. That way, I can get what's coming to me.

I'm in 4th right now with about 15k.

10:37 - Break time! The top 5:

drjgame3 22593
CautionESPN 16359
griffondg 16346
RandomSam (!) 15135
BrianMC 14085

Back post-break!

10:40 - Break's almost over, and I have an announcement.

I have Limeade.

That is all.

10:46 - drjgame3 is on fire! He has nearly 30k in chips. Of course, he's at my table.

Pants.

10:49 - We're in the money! 18 players left.

10:57 - Eliminations so far:

18 - Hughesers
17 - tapefighter
16 - Roark-8

I'm currently in 4th with 15073. Once I do something interesting, I'll blog it.

11:05 - HAMMER sighting! I raised with the HAMMER before the flop. Boobie Lover calls. Flop comes A66. I bet, Boobie folds. I show, of course. Boobie Lover had dropped a few HAMMERs earlier, so it was quite appropriate. I'm sure Wes will return the favor in some way.

Recent eliminations:

15 - CautionESPN
14 - Shane Nickerson
13 - JeffSmith
12 - dyaz33

I'm in 6th with about 15k.

11:18 - Final table, baby! Dutch77777 (from Columbus) finished 11th and Phil Logan finished 10th. I'm in 4th with about 19000.

w00t!

11:21 - CawtBluffin went out in 9th when her AKo ran into Budohorseman's K6 of clubs. Budo's cards paired and Cawt went down.

(Originally had Cawt as a "he." Was corrected...sorry.)

11:30 - VTepes went down in 8th. I missed the hand.

griffondg finished 7th. Lost to BrainMC's pocket aces...that made quads.

Alas, my run is over. I finished 6th when my KQ ran into Brain's pocket 7s. I overplayed the hand, but I needed to make a move anyway. Pants.

Thanks to everyone for reading this. Thanks to Wil for hosting. Comment and let me know what you think. 'Til next week!

WWdN Invitational live and in ultraviolet!

I'll make some lame-ass commentary here as I donk off chips to other more worthy players!

Life in the Bizarro World...

Apparently, our President has made a budget decision that one would think would irritate his support base...

From the AP story, as found on AmericaBlog:

"President Bush will use his new budget to propose cutting the size of the Army Reserve to its lowest level in three decades and stripping up to $4 billion from two fighter aircraft programs."

and...

"Under the plan, the authorized troop strength of the Army Reserve would drop from 205,000 — the current number of slots it is allowed — to 188,000, the actual number of soldiers it had at the end of 2005. Because of recruiting and other problems, the Army Reserve has been unable to fill its ranks to its authorized level.

Army leaders have said they are taking a similar approach to shrinking the National Guard. They are proposing to cut that force from its authorized level of 350,000 soldiers to 333,000, the actual number now on the rolls."

Fabulous. Aren't we at war? Great idea! Let's trim the recruiting requirements because it's falling short and no one can figure out how to right the ship. That'll do it.

Of course, we could make the Reserve/Guard option a more appealing one by not fighting wars that a good chunk of the country opposes AND employs a large "weekend warrior" population to fight it. Just sayin'...

I leave with one question:

Still diggin' those tax cuts, Mr. President?

Hamas

The recent turn of events in Palestine have gotten me thinking. Now, more than likely, I am a naive moron who knows nothing about the region and ought not be spounting off. In the spirit of the know-it-all American, though, I'll press on with this simpleminded analysis:

Outcome number 1. Hamas fails to change its ways. The actions of Hamas now constitute acts of war. Israel completes the job of turning Palestine into a parking lot.

Outcome number 2. Hamas realizes that Palestine no longer has Fatah acting as a political dielectric between themselves and Israel, and the knowledge that their actions will infact bring the assured destruction of Palestine inspires a more moderate route.

Had a bit of a risotto fest at la casa de mi the other day. My lovely wife called me at work and asked how to make a risotto. After ascertaining that our larder was a bit bare, I said I would just pick up the necessities and make it myself.

I brought home 8 ounces of shitake mushrooms and 4 ounces of smoked swiss cheese, which wound up being enough for 2 batches of risotto. I'll also mention that I'm a pushover - I made two batches in the same night. It seemed a little labor intensive at first, but quite a bit less so now.

The first time I tried my hand at risotto it did not turn out this good, and I left out a fairly significant step - I didn't keep the stock hot. This made a big difference in the cooking time and the consistency of the finished risotto.

I have noticed a bit of variance in some of the recipes I have found online. Try using more or less wine if you like.

6-8 cups chicken stock
3 TBSP unsalted butter
2 TBSP EVOO
1 (ish) cup dryish white wine (bonus points if you finish the rest of the wine yourself!)
4 ounces shitake mushrooms, chopped coarsely
2 ounces smoked swiss
1 small onion
1 to 1.5 cups coarsely chopped broccoli
2 cloves minced garlic
1.5 - 2 cups arborio rice

Bring and keep the stock at a very low simmer. Alton Brown says to add the wine to the stock - I haven't tried that. He's a smart guy though.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and add the onions and EVOO. just cook the onions untill they become translucent, dont saute them. (what's that called?)
Add in the mushrooms, broccoli, and garlic. Turn a few times until the broccoli starts to brighten in color. Add the rice, and turn. Dont let the rice brown.
Add the wine (or a cup of the mixture), and stir while the liquid cooks off. After the liquid cooks off, add enough hot liquid to the mixture to cover the rice. Keep adding and cooking down until the rice is creamy and al dente. Remove from heat and add the cheese. Salt and pepper to taste.

Reconstruction of Sidebar

I'm retooling the sidebar.

I hate the way the blogroll appears.

So I'm eliminating it.

Making a new and possibly improved Links section.

Bear with me today.

Things may look like crap for a day or so.

Amazing video

This was too freakishly awesome not to pass along.

Via The Security Samurai

It's a Presidential MUD!

Today on defective yeti, I saw this:

"Xyzzy
Iraqi Invasion: A Text Misadventure
Revision 88 / Serial number 54892

Oval Office
You are standing inside a White House, having just been elected to the presidency of the United States. You knew Scalia would pull through for you.

There is a large desk here, along with a few chairs and couches. The presidential seal is in the middle of the room and there is a full-length mirror upon the wall.

What do you want to do now?

> INVADE IRAQ
You are not able to do that, yet."

It gets better. Go here. Read it. Laugh, cry, etc.

Check this out...

Today a got a call from an old friend and bandmate. His name is Phillip, and he was the guitar player in the band I used to sing in and Scott drummed for. Our band was called Psycho Analysis, and we did our thing for just under a year.

Well, Phillip's kept his nose around the music world and has a new act called Gravity. He does all the music while another friend of ours (he goes by "spider-monkey" on the Gravity page, so I won't out him here) does the vocals. It's quite good and funny in parts. Check them out if you dare.

Important!!!
The subject matter in the music isn't for the "virgin ear." So, I guess Parental Advisory: Explicit Content and all that applies here.

Stuff

I have so totally not felt like blogging over the past few days. I've been just limping around the internets aimlessly. A few oddments for you...

  • Josh introduced me (and Justin and a few others) to a new (to us) real-time strategy game, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. It's quite good, and definitely a change from StarCraft, which was our previous RTS game of choice. A LAN party is scheduled for Monday, which is a holiday at work. Lots of Jedi, Sith, Gungans, rebels, Stormtroopers and the like are gonna die.
  • I cashed in a PokerStars tournament Monday night. I finished 196th out of 2298 players. Not a monumental task, but it gets me out of the funk I've been in regarding those tourneys. The last few 2000+ player tournaments I've played on 'Stars, I went out between 300 and 400. I should've/could've done better, but I let some things around the house distract me. I may play in one tonight with the music and headphones on and see what happens. (By the way, for my finish, I won $8.27. I paid in $3.30. That's right. Five bucks. At least I had fun...)
  • In case you didn't see it, Gretchen scored higher (peep the comments) than I did on the nerd test. I don't know what that means other than I'm an extremely lucky human.
  • We registered for Origins early this year. Josh, Justin, and I got four-day passes and Gretchen and Leslie (Justin's wife for those who aren't keeping score at home) got Saturday tickets. Team RandomHumans.com will be out in force! Hopefully, in our own shirts...definitely in PANTS ('cause none of you want to see us without them, and if you do, you need professional help...)! Seriously, though, we'll probably play lots of Magic and poker, since that is what we do. Well, that and celebrate our personal geekdom, natch.

Speaking of shirts, we are quite happy to accept submissions for a cool shirt. If anyone out there actually cares enough to do so, send an email to randomshirts(at)randomhumans.com and we'll take a look at it. Chances are if we want to use your design, you'll get a free one and a mention on the site and stuff. No promises or anything...I'm just sayin' "if"...

Cotton Bowl: Alabama 13, Texas Tech 10

Alabama clinched their first 10-win season since 2002 today by defeating Texas Tech 13-10. Defensively, it was a dominating performance, with Tech only really getting two good drives all day. Tide kicker Jamie Christensen hit a 46-yard field goal as time expired to give Alabama the win.

It was a great season that, while it could have been more, put Alabama back on the college football map. Now to recruiting and next year!

Roll Tide!
