Heads-Up Tournament Tonight

I'm playing in a heads-up tournament tonight on PokerStars. As posted by Joanne at CardSquad:
Hope to see everyone there.

It would be cool to be the HAMMER, but...

You scored as Big Slick. You are the comrades in arms, best buddies Big Slick - Ace-King. Not prone to rash decisions, you are impeccable, recognize a good opportunity, but won't procede unless the conditions aren't just right and you have gathered all the evidence.

Return

Yesterday, Gretchen and I returned from our trip down south. My grandfather passed away on Wednesday, February 8, about one hour after G and I arrived. My mom tells the story of the time before, during, and after here.

My two cents: I've lost someone who wasn't just my grandfather, but also a dear friend. However, I thank God that he's no longer suffering with his illness and has moved on to what I believe is a much better place than this rock we're tooling around on. It's sad for us, but for him, it's all good.

As I said in one of my last posts, my mom has been a champ in all of this. I'm just glad I was able to help at least a little bit in the time I was there this past week.

A couple random things (since that's what we do here) before I go:
  • Baby! Damn that kid is cute. Can't be Justin's and Leslie's...just can't...oh wait, it looks like them...(awkward)...Congratulations! Since we couldn't be there for birth, expect the spoiling to be at one million percent or something.
  • Congrats to SirFWALGMan on winning the last WWdN tournament I participated in. Congrats to Justin for finishing 17th in this weeks tourney. Congrats to me and Justin in advance for doing well next Tuesday (power of positive thinking, right?). I plan to live blog again, so we'll see how that goes.

On a practical note

The hospital sent us home with the BEST PACIFIER EVER (insert cheesy QuadraVerb plate echo here) and I managed to find, with my mad research skillz (cuz the website is written ON THE BEST PACIFIER EVER) the maker/distributor of said BEST PACIFIER EVER:
Soothie by Childrens Medical Ventures

*appellation of title "BEST PACIFIER EVER" is an arbitrary award based on the pleasing vanilla scent of said pacifier.

Faithful protector or hungry puppy?

WWdW Primo Tenore invitational

The WWdN tourney this week has for some reason been one of the more terrifying PokerStars tournaments I have played in. Perhaps it helps that Saw II is playing in the living room. I have had some great hands - even big slick, but big slick is rather an underdog to bullets. OOpsie!

Update...trip Kings are nice!

My wife and I would like to welcome our new baby girl, Emily Elizabeth, to this watery little rock. She was born today at 10:49am, weighing in at 6 pounds 4 ounces, and 50cm (about 19.5 inches) long.

UPDATE 3:24 PM Emily is now learning the fine art of breastfeeding!

Dear RandomSam,

You finished the tournament in 6th place.
A $64.35 award has been credited to your Real Money account.

Congratulations!
Thank you for participating.

That's two weeks in a row. I'll break through eventually, but overall, I'm OK with my play. I had fun, which was what it was about. I won't be playing or blogging next week, but hopefully Justin will be. I'll be back the week after.

Now...to Alabama.

Tonight and Beyond...

Tonight...

What: WWdN: Sabboth Invitational
Where: PokerStars.
When: Tuesday, February 7, 2005. 8:30 EST
Password: monkey
Tournament number: 19343704
Buy-in: $10 + $1

I'll be there most likely. Not sure about Justin, but if so, he'll let the world know. Unfortunately, I will not be live-blogging, due to a personal situation I'll detail in a moment. Hopefully, Justin will, even if he doesn't play. I may, however, toss an update up at the end of my tournament. I finished 6th last week, and hope to follow up with another good showing.

Tomorrow morning, Gretchen and I are going to be leaving for Alabama/Tennessee until next Thursday. As mentioned in my last post, my grandfather is in the hospital. Unfortunately, he has taken a turn for the worse, and we're not sure how long he'll last. Wednesday was the earliest we could get away because of commitments here (work arrangements, Girl Scouts, etc.). Thankfully, because we worked today, both G and I were able to get more time off to be with family.

Family is very important. My mother has been with my grandfather (or "Papa" as we call him) every step of the way on this. She's travelling 30 or 40 or more miles per day so that her dad gets the kind of care he wants in his terminally ill (emphysema) state. He's lived with his condition for 20 years (give or take) and has had a lot of time to prepare. I'm confident that my mom knows what he wants, since she's helped him formulate his wishes into a power of attorney.

My mom has done so much for her parents (and just about every one else in her life, myself included) and her health has suffered for it. I just want to publically thank her for being there for my Papa during all this. I'll thank her personally tomorrow. However, mom, if you're reading this (and I know you will eventually)...Thanks. I love you.

Expect me to be silent until our return. Even if I find a computer with a high-speed internet connection, I doubt I'll be up to posting. I trust my fellow RandomHumans will toss a post or two up in my absence (especially if Justin's wife has that kid!)...

Peace.

Wednesday

I paid for my success in Wil's tournament Tuesday night. You see, I had been feeling quite sick all day Tuesday. Despite countless warnings from people that I should definitely listen to, I played poker anyway. And I decided to live blog.

So, of course, I end up doing well (thanks to kicking it luckbox-style on a couple of hands) and feeling like utter crap afterwards. I was in this weird place between satisfaction (from my play, which could have been better, but was good in the abstract, and the results were tremendous) and what-the-hell-was-I-thinking-playing-poker-and-blogging-instead-of-sleeping.

So I get up Wednesday morning to a full-blown case of fever, chills, aches, pains, and fun.

Pants.

As I'm feverish, I call the workplace and stay in bed.

I basically alternate between unconsiousness and playing Jade Empire on XBox (when sleep became too uncomfortable and daytime TV was only other choice) until Gretchen calls at 4:45. I drag myself from my bed, clean up a bit and move downstairs to await food. I check mail and Bloglines briefly. On a hunch, I check StatCounter to see just how many hits Tuesday night brought.

173!

Pants.

That is a record for this here site, but we won't tell anyone...else. We's small time...for now.

(Thanks again to Wil and ingoal for the link-love.)

I update a few links on the blog and close everything up just as Gretchen gets home. The food is given to me and I feel extremely well in comparison to moments before consuming it. Grilled chicken, french fries, biscuits, and salad courtesy of Bob Evans.

I go upstairs post-food consumption to play a little more Jade Empire. Gretchen runs out to catch dessert with a couple friends. I continue to lay back and recoup until she gets home. We go downstairs and watch DVR'd American Idol before going to bed (those people totally can't sing, it amazes me that on season 5, they still get this dreck).

On a sadder note, during the day, Gretchen and I get word that my grandfather, who has been in the hospital since Sunday, was being moved to Chattanooga into the ICU. He's not doing particularly well, although he may have improved by the time I click "publish." Anyway, for those of you that do, please say a quick prayer for him and my family.
