Just a Thought...

This is a piggyback off of a post I read today on the Progressive Christian Movement blog. They don't post often, but when they do, it's quite good (and they're from the Columbus area). They definitely have the right idea. Read it before reading on...

I don't get it.

I am a Christian.

I read the Bible.

Apparently, I didn't get the memo.

You see, to be a in the United States apparently means that you must condemn everyone who believes even a wee bit differently than you.

I'm not saying I agree with everyone's point of view, nor do I believe that "everyone has it right" or anything like that. I do believe that everyone has a right to believe how they wish, to act how they wish to act, and to have sex with whomever they want.

I also am completely against hate of any kind. I don't care if its race, color, sex, creed, nationalily, sexual orientation, or whether or not the person enjoys football, they should have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else.

Now, why is it that groups (in the name of God, no less) proceed to spread the message of hate against homosexuals, African-Americans, leadership of other countries (Pat Robertson, I'm talking about you), etc?

It's about money and power. People have given them their money, so now they have power. With said power, they will tell you who to blame for everything that's wrong with this country. They'll tell you that the gay couple next door, the liberal judge or professor, or the woman who was raped and got an abortion are at fault. They're the enemy.

They won't tell you about the bills you won't be able to pay because you've given them more money than you really have. They won't tell you about the millions of dollars they have in the bank that buys them anything they want while you struggle to put food on your table. They won't say anything that might actually take money from them or their cause and place it somewhere else.

As long as you drink the Kool-Aid and don't think for yourself, they will be right. As long as you read the Bible the way they tell you to, they'll be right. But try something for me - read the New Testament for yourself (particularly the Gospels). You know the one, the one that the entire foundation of is built on. Cite specifically where Jesus says that you should deny the rights of others because they disagree with your way of life.

I believe you'll have trouble coming up with something. While you're reading, check out what Jesus had to say on the Pharisees. I believe that you'll see some interesting parallels with current leadership, both religious and secular.

But hey, I didn't get the memo.

/rant

I'd like to remind everyone that I respect the opinions of everyone out there, so long as they are not preaching hate. Those that "flame" this post will be given the appropriate response. If you don't like it, tell me - but be polite. Also, please remember that I'm not talking about all churches, just those that seem to have other motives than preaching the Word.

For my aforementioned birthday, a good friend purchased for me a copy of Doom III for my XBox.

I tried my hand at the PC version. The magic in my machine was insufficient, and Doom III was rendered as a frustrating slideshow.

On the other hand, the xbox is sufficiently advanced to play what I now realize to be a wonderful, challenging game.

Musings - August 23

Did you hear...

Didn't think so. Now you have.

Justin and I worked on my computer on Sunday. Verdict: It's dead, Jim. The power supply is fried, and there's no going back for it. Temporarily, we've put my hard drive into my mom's computer (whose hard drive is no more). If anyone has a line on any super-cheap (under $50)hard drives (such as the ones shown here) - let me know...I'll check it out. I'll need to purchase at least one, if not two, before Thanksgiving.

It's almost football season, and I can't wait. Expect updates on my beloved Alabama Crimson Tide as the season wears on. Should be a great year.

Hey, look, it's that Scott guy again!

Hopefully that was said by at least one person. What with Justin joining the blog community, and Sam's newfound desire to actually post things, I don't have any posts showing, and haven't for quite a while... Ah, well. That just makes me more random. Or else lazy. Probably both. Anyway, here I am, back in the blog again, for a few days, until mine gets buried. Unless I start blogging more often. It could happen...
So, my first attempt at getting into a CNA program was a bust. Total waste of my time. I was told by numerous people to just go on the first day and add the course. That's what everyone said. I went the first day (into the Bayview, no less... Eep!), was around an hour early, found the classroom, sat down, the whole nine yards. Nine yards was all, though. Nine yards, but it was fourth and eleven... Found out that I needed to be fingerprinted for a background check, have a physical, and have the results with me on the first day of class. Of course, if anyone had known this and let me in on the secret, I could have had those things with me. I mean, it's not like I wouldn't have had the time to do it. It would probably have cut into my play, but I would have made the sacrifice. Oh, well, it's okay now. I've found another program, and a better one. It will cost more, but it's a 6-week program, which will get me out just before my unemployment money runs out. That will be nice, all in all. They also have better placement services, so maybe I won't have to try and file an extension on my unemployment. We'll see how things shape up.
Onward, to other randomly-chosen topics...
You know, it wasn't really the best time for me when Blizzard did the ladder reset. I had just beaten Baal, could finally make cows, play in nightmare, etc. I had just started getting really good weapons and armor. Then, my character becomes nonladder, and if I want a chance at getting the really good equipment and the best of the runewords, I have to start over. So, I did, of course, new barb, slightly different build. I need good armor, though, so if there are any D2:LOD players on Ladder reading this, and you want to give me some free armor (my other barb had Boneflesh, the unique plate mail, and it was very nice...) definitely drop me a line. Most people just think I'm a geek now, probably. I can live with that.
My bike is running well, as usual, but I'm not running it very much. It's close to the 15k service (has been for some time now), and that's not a cheap one. Add to that the cost of new tires, front and rear, and things just got pricier... So, yeah, even though I have lots of time, and could do quite a bit of riding (carefully, as I don't have any health insurance...), I won't be doing much. About once a week, just so I don't get too rusty. If it wasn't for D2, I'd go insane.
Things in general are going well. Amy and I are settling in nicely. The apartment is coming together, and we got a cat. Well, really a kitten (about 2 months old.) He's getting neutered today (not a choice, as we got him from the pound, and they won't release an unfixed animal), and we should be picking him up Wednesday. We're naming him Stig (Old Norse for "wanderer"). He's light grey, slightly darker grey tabby pattern, with white on the belly, chest, paws, and some on the face. He's a really cute kitten. His tail has a kink in it (apparently broken sometime before he was found, and healed badly) which just adds to his charm. In case you couldn't tell yet, I'm one of those weird guys who like cats. Funnily enough, cats usually tend to like me, too. I just understand them. It's probably because there were always cats when I was growing up. There were a number of outdoor cats in my early youth, then there was my mother's hellspawn Himalayan, Precious (seriously, if you name a male cat "Precious", I believe you deserve what you get...), then more outdoor cats. There were the semi-feral cats in the woods around the house, and the wandering cats that were really other people's outdoor cats. I made friends with a number of them. So, that's probably why I'm a cat person. I'll try to keep my cat related postings to a minimum, though. I didn't say that would happen, but I'll try. Hell, my postings in general are at kind of a minimum anyway, so it will probably happen.
Other aspects of the household are going nicely as well. I had no idea how easy it could be cohabitating (or "living in sin" if you prefer). I mean, it's really easy. It blows me away how "right" it feels, living with the person you love. I was a little scared at first that I would scare her away, or just annoy her until she imploded (and then how would I pay the rent???), but things have really gone well. It's just really quite nice living with Amy. And, no, I'm not trying to brownnose here, she doesn't read the blog. At least, not that I know of. So, what I'm saying is actually true here. I'm just not that eloquent is all.
Now I should stop typing, so that I can get some things done today, but it's been fun. Hope all you random people enjoy my odd musings. Off I go...

Sam, Sam, Back Again...

Sam is no longer posting from Dunlap, Tennessee or Stevenson, Alabama or anywhere else. He's back in Columbus, and is plugging himself back into the matrix.

Howdy, partners! It's great to be back home. I had a wonderful vacation. Gretchen and I discussed whether Big Lots and Highlights would let us have an extra week. We then decided that they wouldn't.

Damn.

So I get back to work on Monday, and my supervisor comes over to ask the requisite "How was your vacation?" question and to fill me in on last week's goings-on. She then proceeds to give me my check stub (I have my money directly deposited, woo hoo!) and an envelope containing my yearly performance review. I am to look it over and return it tomorrow with my signature.

I got a raise!

I got a decent (for my department) raise!

Woo hoo! Yay for Sam!

(This would be where you turn away as I do the Happy Dance.)

(You can come back now.)

I won't disclose the numbers (lest you all know just how poor I am), but life is better. All that after Friday. Friday was great! However, I need to put up my disclaimer:

THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS CONTAIN CONTENT. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

That's better. My friend Phillip and I decided to go to a tournament on Friday night. We tested all day Friday and decided on a Tooth & Nail build for Phil, while I took a Mono-Blue Control deck. The decklists can be found here.

Long story short, Phillip won the event! He beat a rather cocky human who is one of the better players in the state of Tennessee. I finished around 5th or 6th, just missing the Top 4 playoffs. I played new, inexperienced, and/or bad players all day, but had fun anyway. I helped some newer player that I dismantled in Round 4 with his deck, taught someone how to play Tooth & Nail as they beat me senseless, and berated a young player for playing bad Magic. Don't look at me that way - he had a great deck, told me so, then proceeded to play it badly. I did come back to him later and explain his play mistakes more specifically, although I don't believe it registered. Oh well, he'll figure it out someday...

I am planning on hitting a Columbus area tournament soon with this new Tooth & Nail variant. Here's hoping I'll be reporting a win for me before the month is out.

Until next time, enjoy the fruits of your work and your play.

Boing Boing: Praying mantis catches and eats hummingbird

Wow.

On disturbing smells

It's bad enough to walk by a dumpster
in the mid-August heat and be assaulted
by the rank stench of rotting garbage.

What's worse, though, is when it smells
like Cheetos. Trash shouldn't smell like
a snack food. That's just wrong.

Vacation for Sam...

I'm going on vacation for the next week. Can't wait to get out of Columbus for a few days. Gretchen and I are heading for Alabama, where we'll spend time with friends and family from there. Should be good fun.

Some musings before I go...

  • I won at poker last night! Finally the cards came at the same time as good play, and I came out on top. I've actually had a good couple of weeks, so maybe I don't hate it quite as much right now.
  • Rafael Palmeiro is cooperating with Congress and revealing his records. I'm not sure what that means in the long run, but he's doing the right thing right now. Of course, he needs to tell everyone what's up, but we'll see...
  • This is pretty funny, although probably unintentionally...
  • This is amazing. Just check it out. I found it on Furrygoat.
Have a great week...I'll try to post this week, but if not, Justin (and maybe Scott) will keep you company, I'm sure.

Rafael Palmeiro

Shame on you.

How could you be so stupid?

How could you be so vain?

How could you lie to us?

On Monday, Baltimore Orioles first baseman was suspended by Major League Baseball for violating their policy.

Yes, Rafael Palmeiro.

You know, the guy who has over 500 career home runs. The guy who just recently grabbed his 3000th hit. The guy who, up until Monday, had everyone defending his Hall of Fame candidacy. The guy who wagged his finger at Congress while testifying that he never used steroids and that Jose Canseco was full of crap.

Full of crap? Maybe. Looking a little more credible? Definitely.

I am not here to defend or his tell-all book. Quite frankly, I don't care whether it's true or not. However, he implicates Palmeiro, and Raffy got caught. It sure has me scratching my head.

Of course, maybe Palmeiro just took steroids after an April and May to forget. Maybe he took them, as he says, "unknowingly." Maybe he's a career doper.

Or maybe he's just an idiot.

Either way, he needs to come clean. He needs to tell everyone what he took, when he took it, and where he got it. If he truly meant what he said on Capitol Hill, he will do this.

Or maybe he'll just continue to be an idiot.
